Traditions Explained
Bread and Salt (Chleb i Sól)
At the wedding reception, the bride and groom are greeted by their parents with a tray holding bread (symbolizing prosperity), salt (representing life’s difficulties), and sometimes vodka. The couple takes a bite of bread and a pinch of salt, then a shot of vodka, as a symbolic gesture of facing both the sweet and bitter moments of life together.
Throwing of the Glasses
After the vodka toast, the couple throws the empty shot glasses behind them. It’s considered good luck if they shatter — symbolizing breaking with the past and bringing good fortune.
Wishes for the Bride and Groom
Guests often line up to offer the couple their best wishes, usually at the start of the wedding reception. These “życzenia” include expressions of love, happiness, health, and prosperity. It is also the opportunity to give the bride and groom a card or note. It’s a heartfelt and often emotional tradition that emphasizes community and support.

Transport
FLIGHTS
The closest airport to our wedding venue is John Paul II Kraków-Balice International Airport (KRK). The airport is approximately 1 hour 30 mins from the hotel by car.
Flight recommendation for our U.S.-based guests:
Chicago to Kraków
LOT Polish Airlines offers direct flights from Chicago (ORD) to Kraków (KRK). These flights leave on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday every week in September.
Flight recommendation for our Netherlands-based guests:
Eindhoven to Kraków
RyanAir offers direct flights from Eindhoven (EIN) to Kraków (KRK). These flights are typically available every day. Flying from Eindhoven is the most affordable option.
Amsterdam to Kraków
However, if you prefer to fly from Amsterdam, KLM offers direct flights from Amsterdam (AMS) to Kraków (KRK) every day. These flights are a bit more expensive than those departing from Eindhoven via RyanAir.
Flight recommendation for our Belgium-based guests:
Brussels to Kraków
RyanAir offers direct flights from Brussels – Charleroi (CRL) to Kraków (KRK). These flights are typically available every day except Sunday. Flying from Charleroi is the most affordable option. However, if you prefer to fly from Brussels – Zaventem (BRU), some direct flights to Kraków (KRK) are offered via Brussels Airlines. Note: direct flights from BRU are limited (usually only one offered per day; a bit more expensive than flying from CRL). There are also more frequent indirect flights to KRK from BRU with layovers in Munich.
CAR RENTAL
Car rental options:
We highly recommend that you rent a car to get around Southern Poland, if possible, as public transportation options are limited (and exploring the beautiful sites via car is much easier!). A complete list of car rental companies offered from Kraków Airport can be found here.
Tip: It is often cheaper if you reserve via the Polish company site (For example: Budget.pl and not Budget.com – you can use Google translate to navigate the web page)
IMPORTANT: If you have a U.S. driver’s license, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Poland. How can you obtain an IDP? More information can be found here. This is NOT necessary if you hold an EU driver’s license.
OTHER
Shuttle or Taxi from Kraków Airport:
If you can’t or don’t want to rent a car, our wedding planner Kasia Calcutt can help you arrange transportation from Kraków Airport to Hotel Bachledówka. She speaks both Polish and English. You can contact her by calling or texting +48 604 452 246 or by emailing her at info@kclovestories.co.uk. Please mention to her that you are a guest of Iza & Ian’s wedding in September 2025!

Truly fusing our lives together, our wedding will feature a number of traditions from both Poland and the Netherlands. However, Polish traditions are quite particular and may require additional explanation for those unfamiliar with them. If you are curious about what to expect, we recommend reading this article, which offers a good general explanation! Looking for more information? This account of an American attending a Polish wedding also makes for a fun read. While we won’t be doing everything exactly according to tradition, this at least gives you a better idea of what is typical in Poland.
“Poprawiny” refers to the traditional second day of festivities. It literally means to “fix” or “correct” – basically offering a chance to improve upon the first day of celebrations. This second day is less formal than the first. You may expect extra food, drinks, and dancing, but in a more relaxed setting. Dress code is semi-formal.
